Life and family

Business owners and the people who depend on them

What changes when a household income is also somebody else's paycheck, and which questions owners tend to postpone.

Guide
6 minute readSelf employed clients and business owners

Business owners are usually the last people in their own plan. The business gets attention, the family gets attention, and the connection between them waits.

Three sets of obligations at once An owner is generally responsible to a household, to lenders or landlords who extended credit on the strength of the business and to employees whose income depends on the business continuing. Those three do not always point the same direction.

Where the lines blur Self employed households often use one vehicle for both purposes, run part of the operation from a home, or hold assets personally that the business relies on. Each of those is worth naming out loud, because assumptions about what is covered where are common and expensive.

Continuity is a conversation first Owners often expect continuity planning to be a document. In practice it starts as a conversation about who could keep the doors open for ninety days, who has access to what, and what the family would need immediately. The document comes later and is easier to write once those answers exist.

Questions worth putting on the calendar - If I could not work for six months, what happens to payroll - Who has legal authority to act for the business - What has grown since the last time anyone reviewed this - What did we set up when we were much smaller that no longer fits

When to revisit Growth is the trigger, not the calendar. A first employee, a lease, a loan, a partner, a second location or a large equipment purchase all change the picture more than another year passing does.
